Business Idea : Movie roll out

on Saturday, September 12, 2009

It’s been an idea which has been kicking in my head for an year now.  Quite a times, I wonder as why we don’t have this in place.

With the penetration of DTH services and growth of realty television, there has been significant rise in TV viewership in India. My recent visit to Mumbai just confirmed my belief when I saw DTH cables touching even the remotest of the slums. Also, there has been a phenomenal increase in number of movie releases and movie watching. Multiplexes are a big hit these days with plenty of movie screens. But, but, but, I see a large gap when it comes to catering huge movie demand, both in India and overseas.

If we closely observe the situation, people have been waiting for a better alternative to multiplex movie watching. As there are not many good multiplexes around. Getting a ticket for the latest blockbuster is always a big draw. Parking gets to the neck when it comes to weekend. Burgeoning traffic is always a big issue when it comes to metros. Availability of time is another an issue for frequent business travelers and modern day professionals. To avoid all this, people are preferring home theatres to a large extent. Parallely, I see a large outflow of people from villages to check out a new movie release. I have seen people going gaga over new releases.

Latest movie releases directly to home, same day. This is what essentially, I am thinking of. Who gains? Customers (in villages, metros and overseas) and Producers to a great extent. Who loses? May be few multiplexes. It is a significant shift in movie distribution and watching experience. We can put a sound business model around this idea and can hope to extend it for good.  I can think of lot many positives outnumbering negatives it will bring. What do you think about it?

People do not go to movie (multiplex) just to watch a movie. I believe they go to a movie for the experience of spending time outside of the home. Entertainment proposition include fun(utility) involved in spending time together with your loved ones away from your home travelling, in a new environment , watching Movie in Multiplex and eating out. I think if all others factors are taken out fun (utility) from watching a movie at home is negative. Movies do not entertain - it s the whole experience which is a change from regular activity that entertains. If you have DTH you will be able to get to see a good movie (unwatched) anyways. What is available easily cannot be a cherished experience.
My calculation is there is no gain for anybody.
